Creatures that live in the soil

The Grade 5’s spent a busy and productive 3 days during their Integrated Learning Task this week. Working in pairs, they presented the research they had done last week, firstly as a visual poster and secondly in the form of an oral presentation.img_6117img_6109Summarising information and putting it into their own words, is a skill they are still developing. They were encouraged to avoid plagiarism and to acknowledge their sources. Some very attractive and interesting posters were produced, while sticking to the deadlines set.                                                                                                                              img_6115Well done Grade 5’s! I think we all learnt a lot from each other!img_6129img_6125img_6131img_6120img_6122img_6113

Soil gives life!

Part of our soil investigation was taking a closer look at what is happening underground. Here are a few of the children’s interpretations of how they see life in our soil.

ILT Focus 3 – Peer teaching

We concluded our Integrated Learning Task by giving all of the children the opportunity to report their findings and research to their peers.  They continued working in their pairs and they were given 90 minutes to prepare and rehearse a presentation. Once again they were encouraged to have a creative approach, so some of them were news reporters, others were presenters on Discovery channel, we had a group of teachers and also a safari with a tour guide out in the African bush. Everyone remained engaged throughout the presentations and it was a worthwhile learning experience.

I am happy to show off a few of our presenters.

ILT Focus 2 – Spotlight on Soil Creatures

Leading up to our Integrated Learning Task, the Grade 5’s researched a soil creature of their choice that lives in Africa. During the ILT their research was written into their own words and used to create an informative poster. We asked the children to provide the scientific name for their creature and to discuss their appearance, habitat, diet and some interesting facts. The children worked in pairs for this task. They were encouraged to be creative and to make use of relevant pictures. The following were put to the test:  Their ability to follow instructions, work independently, make decisions, plan, manage their time, deal with conflict, compromise and … of course … clean up! They enjoyed being allowed to express themselves by creating final products that they were all very proud of.

Below you can see how busy they were making their posters.

And of course, they had to prank the teacher!  A few “creatures” that just happened to be “crawling” around on the floor, made me jump with fright.  Take a look at what I had to deal with …

And here are the guilty parties involved …

They finally all completed their posters.  Take a look at their handiwork.

ILT Focus 1 – What lives in Mr Raven’s Garden?

To kick-start our Integrated Learning Task for this term, the children were asked to take a closer look at the kind of creatures that live in the soil in Mr Raven’s garden. After helping Mr Raven solve a few Mathematical problems regarding the bugs, insects and creatures that hide in his garden, they had to complete a survey of the various creatures by filling in a tally table, using the evidence shown to them in a movie. The children worked in pairs for this activity. They used the information in their tally tables to draw a column graph and a pictograph. The next step was to come up with three clever questions related to their graphs. They worked in pairs and had to divide the workload equally, while checking and helping one another along the way.

Here the children are in the IT centre, busy with their survey.

This week in the Rainbird class

This week we have enjoyed learning while playing games and practical investigation.

We played the memory game in our Afrikaans period to help learn the meaning and translation of our vraagwoorde.

During Maths our adding and subtracting skills were tested with The Checkerboard Race game. It was a race to the end with the highest scores. A white board came in handy for the working out our calculations.

NS had us investigating different types of soil. It was interesting seeing the different types of soil we have in our gardens at home. Then we got to start some research and discover what soil creatures live in the soil in Africa apart from the common critters. Our iPads came in handy for this task.

When the heat got too much for us what better than to take a cool off swim in the pool with friends.

What better way to end off the week with Friendship day dressed in our red, white and pink.

Take a look at the variety of activities we participated in over the week…

Presenting our Creatures

New Pics 110

We hope that you all enjoyed our presentation of the prairie dog.

Our Grade 5 children were supposedly approached by the SABC to create and present a nature documentary for television on their soil creatures.  They used this opportunity to present the information on their soil creature posters to the rest of the class in an interesting and creative way.  Everyone remained fully engaged in what was being said throughout all of the presentations.  They really loved hearing about all the different animals and had so much fun watching their friends pretend to be TV presenters.

These two crazy scientists were most entertaining!

The Sisters in Science taught us all about the hedgehog – apparently they have about 500 fleas each.

Soil Creatures!

New Pics 053

It is important to plan where everything goes on your poster.

After researching a soil creature of their choice, the children had to transcribe the information into their own words and then transfer it onto a poster.  They worked in pairs and had to agree on their course of action for the task.  The children learnt all about their creature’s appearance, habitat and diet.  They also researched some interesting facts about their creature.

Working together – we are a phenomenal team!

We chose to learn all about Meerkats.
