The Grade 5’s spent a busy and productive 3 days during their Integrated Learning Task this week. Working in pairs, they presented the research they had done last week, firstly as a visual poster and secondly in the form of an oral presentation.Summarising information and putting it into their own words, is a skill they are still developing. They were encouraged to avoid plagiarism and to acknowledge their sources. Some very attractive and interesting posters were produced, while sticking to the deadlines set. Well done Grade 5’s! I think we all learnt a lot from each other!

Leading up to our Integrated Learning Task, the Grade 5’s researched a soil creature of their choice that lives in Africa. During the ILT their research was written into their own words and used to create an informative poster. We asked the children to provide the scientific name for their creature and to discuss their appearance, habitat, diet and some interesting facts. The children worked in pairs for this task. They were encouraged to be creative and to make use of relevant pictures. The following were put to the test: Their ability to follow instructions, work independently, make decisions, plan, manage their time, deal with conflict, compromise and … of course … clean up! They enjoyed being allowed to express themselves by creating final products that they were all very proud of.

And of course, they had to prank the teacher! A few “creatures” that just happened to be “crawling” around on the floor, made me jump with fright. Take a look at what I had to deal with …

To kick-start our Integrated Learning Task for this term, the children were asked to take a closer look at the kind of creatures that live in the soil in Mr Raven’s garden. After helping Mr Raven solve a few Mathematical problems regarding the bugs, insects and creatures that hide in his garden, they had to complete a survey of the various creatures by filling in a tally table, using the evidence shown to them in a movie. The children worked in pairs for this activity. They used the information in their tally tables to draw a column graph and a pictograph. The next step was to come up with three clever questions related to their graphs. They worked in pairs and had to divide the workload equally, while checking and helping one another along the way.
