ILT In the Rainbird class

There has been great excitement as we have embarked on a journey to research different soil creatures. There is a busy buzz in the classroom as the children put their heads together to provide creative presentations. Research on iPads has definitely been an exciting new activity guaranteed to make learning fun. The creations are really impressing their teacher! We look forward to them telling the class about these interesting creatures…

Adjusting to the pace of Grade 5

Five weeks have flown past in Grade 5 already! We seem to be moving and working at such a fast pace. It’s not always easy to adjust to this change, and for some Grade 5’s this can be very stressful. Encouragement and guidance is often needed. Certainly learning how to plan ahead and manage time are vital life skills with which our children need to be equipped.

The week that was…in the Penguin class

The children in the Penguin class have started to settle down to some typical Grade 5 school work over the past two weeks. Comments from the children have ranged from them loving the new challenges, to being constantly tired, to being very excited that Friday has arrived. They are all learning new things and that is the most important thing! Whether through a groupwork activity, or them sharing an answer or story in class, or through devotion time in the mornings. It is also wonderful to see them reach out and help each other with a task or to assist with an instruction for a task.

One of the Social Science tasks included learning about mapwork skills. They thoroughly enjoyed studying an atlas to determine the grid references for a particular place. They particularly enjoy finding the coldest place in an area and finding the highest mountain peak. They were also instructed to play a Afrikaans alphabet game -they ended up creating their own way to play the alphabet game aswell. We also had Calumn’s Birthday celebration this week and we devoured the delicious cake brought from home. Life is after all all about Birthday’s when you are ten or eleven. Mathematics this week was all about addition and subtraction and they enjoyed a homework task which involved working the sums out on a  calculator, and then turning the calculator upside down which presented them with a ‘word’ to fill in on a crossword puzzle. The best day of all was when they could bring their iPads so that they could be registered on our Elkanah network. They so look forward to the opportunity of working with iPads in the classroom. We look forward to the week that lies ahead!! First…a time for family and rest.
