We are currently studying various soil types in Natural Sciences and today we investigated sandy, clayey and loamy soil. The children worked in groups and had a hands-on experience. They had to discover the properties of each soil type by looking at the size, density, colour and texture of the particles. They recorded their findings in a tabel. This was an excellent activity for our tactile learners!
No, you’re not supposed to TASTE it.
Clayey soil – definitely mushy.
Densely packed particles with very little air and humus.
An even closer look at soil…
I’m dirtier than you!
So this is what we discovered…
Earlier this week the Grade 5’s drew pictures portraying the life that is found in soil. I just had to share these two pictures with you.
Life in Soil 1
Life in Soil 2
Watter woord kom volgende?
This week the Grade 5’s embarked on a car survey. We wanted to see how many of each colour car we could count. The children stood on the side of the road and filled in a tally sheet while they were counting. Later, once they were back in class, they filled in their totals and then they used the information which they had gathered in the field, to construct a column graph and a pictograph. This exercise helped the children to see how a real life experience can become relevant in the classroom and be used as a teaching tool.

Grade 5 has got off to a good start. Lots has been happening in the first week and a half of the year. From getting to know our teachers, treasure hunts, being sprayed in the heat to our annual Beach outing. What a wonderful day we had today for all to bond and get to know each other a little better. The weather was just right, the teachers and parents relaxed, the waves were a perfect size to have fun in and time spent out of the class amongst friends….what could be better?
